If you need some wall art decoration, hanging up posters or canvases is usually the way to go. My parents always complained about me not wanting any decoration in my room. But as I get older, I understand it more. Wall art can liven up the room or serve as a reminder of your ideal vacation spot. Whatever you decide to hang up on your wall, you want to make sure that it won’t leave any mark, so that you don’t have to worry about losing your deposit. Generally speaking, framed posters are the most popular type of temporary home decoration. Ahead are the five best ways to hang posters without damaging the poster, or your wall.
How do I flatten my poster?
Before we tell you how to put up a poster without damaging it, We want to address one of the most commonly asked topics, which is how to flatten a poster. The last thing you want to do is decorate your walls with artwork that isn’t flattened correctly. to flatten your poster the right way, follow these steps:
Unpack your posters, and fold them the opposite way from how they curl.
Wrap rubber bands around the opposite-rolled poster. Let your poster sit like this for an hour or two.
When the time has passed, remove the rubber bands, place your poster on a clean surface, and smooth out the poster.
Place weights on the corners of the poster and in the center of your poster. Normally, two to four hours should do the trick. Find some weights that won’t damage the poster, like books.
When this is done, you can remove the books and your poster should be ready to be put in a frame or on the wall!
Best way to hang your poster without damaging the poster
Make sure your wall is spotless and your hands are clean before hanging your poster. Even if the wall may not appear to be dirty, it is common for them to collect various oils and dust, which will make it harder for your poster tack or tape to attach.
Method 1: Use removable mounting putty
Unlike nails, mounting or using poster putty is a perfect way to hang up your poster without damaging it. It’s flexible and customizable, and damage the wall or peel off your paint. The putties are best used on hard surfaces to hold lightweight items, which means they’re ideal to hang up your poster with. To ensure that no paint is lost when you remove the poster, we do advise avoiding freshly painted walls. To hang your poster on the wall with mounting or poster putty, we suggest following these steps:
Stick a piece of (painter’s) tape to the wall to mark where the top part of your poster needs to be.
Pull four pieces of putty, which is roughly one inch. Make them into small balls with a gum-like consistency by kneading them between your fingers.
Stick 1 of the putty balls on each corner of the back of the poster.
Put the poster on the wall one corner at a time. I’d suggest starting with the top left, then the top right, then the bottom side in the same order. Take a good look at the mark on the wall where the top of your poster should be.
Method 2: Use spring clips
Using spring clips or other types of damage-free clips can give a fun different look to how you hang up your posters. It’s just as convenient as using mounting putty. The benefit of this is that you will know for a fact that you won’t damage the poster because it isn’t directly stuck to the wall. Make sure to stay away from bulldog and binder clips. Applying spring clips is very simple:
Stick a piece of (painter’s) tape to the wall to mark where the top of your poster needs to be.
Get two spring clips and clip them to the top of your poster about one inch from each side.
Peel off the protective strip that can be found on the back of the clip.
Stick the clips to the wall, and make sure to take a good look at the mark on the wall where the top of your poster should be.
This should do the trick. If you notice the bottom of the poster lifting, consider adding two more clips to the bottom edges.
Method 3: Use command strips
Using command strips is another great way to put up a poster without damaging it. This process is pretty much the same as using mounting putty:
Stick a piece of (painter’s) tape to the wall to mark where the top of your poster needs to be.
Put your poster down on a flat surface.
Get four pairs of command strips and stick them together
Peel off the protective strip and stick them to the corners of the poster.
Start by sticking the left corner to the wall before sticking the right corner to the wall. Make sure to take a good look at the mark on the wall where the top of your poster should be.
Method 4: Use double-sided tape
There are specific types of removable, double-sided tape that are designed for putting posters on the wall. They have a subtle adhesive that prevents them from peeling the wall or the poster. Using these to put your art on the wall is pretty easy:
Stick a piece of (painter’s) tape to the wall to mark where the top of your poster needs to be.
Put your poster down on a flat surface.
Rip 4 pieces of double-sided tape and stick them on each corner of the poster.
Start by sticking the top left side to the wall, then the top right side. proceed the same way on the bottom side. Make sure to take a good look at the mark on the wall where the top of your poster should be.
Method 5: Use suction cups and a string
This is one of the best ways to hang multiple posters without damaging them. It’s another fun way to hang up your posters too. You can easily add more posters whenever you want, just by taking a longer string and adding more space between the suction cups. To use this method, these are the steps:
Stick a piece of (painter’s) tape to the wall to mark where the top of your poster needs to be.
Start by putting down the posters that you wish to hang up. Lay them down on a flat surface and measure the width from the first poster to the last.
Cut a piece of string for the poster to fit on. With doing this, I’d personally suggest adding six to eight inches to the string for extra space.
Grab the string and attach it to both suction cups.
Pick the two suction cups and attach them to the wall while keeping the string fairly tight.
Lastly, you just need to add some clips to hang your posters onto. We suggest using paper clips or clothespins for this.
What is the right height to hang up wall art?
If your personalized wall art has been delivered, and you have picked the best way to hang up your artwork without damaging it, it’s time to determine the right height to hang up your wall art. Usually, we’re not a fan of talking in absolutes, but there are some recommendations for this topic that are important to mention.
Hanging artwork in your home
The rule of thumb is that the vertical center (the middle of your frame) should be 57” (inches) above the floor, which is generally seen as the average eye level. Museums and galleries usually use this rule. If it works for them, it’s certainly good enough for our homes.
Hanging frames above furniture
If you plan to hang up artwork above furniture such as your couch, bed, or desk, we suggest the bottom of the frame to be about 7 - 10” above the top of the furniture. In terms of width, we always suggest not using more than 70 - 75% of the width of the piece of furniture to decorate your wall.
Hanging multiple artworks together
When hanging multiple artworks, it’s important to see each collection piece as if it’s one. Hanging on (no pun intended) to the 57” rule is a good way to keep the collection balanced. In regards to the spacing between the multiple art pieces, three to six inches is the way to go.
If you have rooms in your house with many low seating areas, it might be better to reconsider the rule of keeping it at the traditional eye level.
